Understanding Future Issues in Saltwater Fisheries Management in Texas

Robert B. Ditton , Brian Bohnsack, and Kevin M. Hunt

Executive Summary

Previous statewide angler surveys in Texas have focused on contemporary problem solving to the exclusion of a long term perspective. In this project we will be taking a more comprehensive and long term view of where anglers stand on a variety of issues now and in the future. Instead of dealing with matters that are already contentious, we hope to gain a better understanding of the problems of tomorrow in advance. This will be useful to fisheries managers who can better plan for necessary research activities and educational efforts in support of agency programs.

Data were collected using a mail questionnaire from a sample of saltwater anglers who responded previously to a statewide angler survey. Project objectives focus on measuring angler attitudes and opinions on a variety of issues such as fishing quality, fishing regulations, environmental quality, and access to fishing. This project was funded by the Coastal Fisheries Branch of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The project began on December 15, 1995 and concluded on December 31, 1997.
