Disclaimer
The "Deer Management Simulator" was not developed as
commercial-grade software. In the DMS, we have attempted to create
a user-interface sufficiently clear to assist users in applying
this software to their own management problems. In addition, although
we have attempted to locate and eliminate programming errors that
might hamper proper use of this software package, no software
can be deemed truly "bug-free." Therefore, we make no
guarantees, either expressed or implied, about the software's
reliability, and cannot be held responsible for any damages incurred
to the user as a result of using this software.
Downloading
Options
We are providing two different options for downloading the program. You have the option downloading the DMS as one large zip (compressed) file (6,383 KB) that contains the program, manual and associated setup files, or you may download the program as 5 individual files onto 3.5 inch diskettes. These files are currently being made available via anonymous FTP at: ftp://ftp.portblakely.com/pub/Wildlife/DMS/
1. Download the DMS as one single compressed (ZIP) file. This
file contains the five individual disk files, a copy of the "User's
Guide and Technical Reference" (in WordPerfect 6.0 format),
the install and extract batch (.BAT) files.
Download the DMS as 5 individual self-extracting EXE files that can be stored or distributed on 3.5 inch diskettes:
In addition you will need to download the following batch files. To download these files using Netscape or Explorer, click on the filename while simultaneously holding down the "shift" key on your computers keyboard. These files can be stored on the same diskette as the "disk 5" file above.
Installation Instructions:
The current version of the DMS was designed for use in a DOS environment.
Thus it has very specific installation requirements. These must
be followed explicitly to insure that the program will be installed
correctly and will function correctly.
Due to its size, the DMS is intended to be run from fixed disk storage on your personal computer. If your copy of the DMS program was distributed to you on 3.5 inch diskettes, then you must first copy the contents of each diskette to a temporary subdirectory (\DMSTEMP) on your computer's hard disk so that the program files can be extracted, and then installed into their own directory (\DMS). If you have limited experience with Personal Computers (PC's) and feel you need additional assistance in making subdirectories or copying files, then we recommend that you refer to your DOS reference manual. After the DMS program files have been successfully installed, any files in the \DMSTEMP temporary directory can be deleted to conserve hard disk space.
To facilitate their distribution, the DMS program files have been compressed into 5 self- extracting executable files (e.g., DISK1.EXE, DISK2.EXE, etc.). Also included with the distribution diskettes are the files README.TXT, EXTRACT.BAT, and INSTALL.BAT. README.TXT is a DOS text file containing step-by-step instructions on how to correctly install the DMS program from the distribution diskettes, as well as any last minute information that may not have been included in the User's Guide and Tutorial. This file can be viewed and read using any word processing program or file editor and we recommend that you view the contents of this file prior to attempting to install the program. EXTRACT.BAT is a batch file which, when invoked, automatically uncompresses the files on the distribution diskettes into the \DMSTEMP subdirectory. INSTALL.BAT is another batch file that installs the DMS programs in the \DMS directory.
The first step in the installation procedure involves creating the temporary directory \DMSTEMP required to extract the compressed files on the distribution diskettes. This directory must be on the hard disk where you intend to install the DMS program files, and it must be created as a subdirectory of the "root" (i.e., home) directory on this drive or the batch files provided for file extraction and for installation may not function correctly. Installation requires approximately 15 megabytes of free storage space, but additional hard disk space will be required to use the DMS program and to create output. Refer to the Technical Specifications & Hardware Requirements section of this manual for further information on program requirements. Careful adherence to the following step-by-step instructions will insure that the DMS program files are properly extracted from the distribution diskettes and correctly installed on your computer's hard disk.
1. Insure that your current drive is the drive where you wish to install the DMS program (e.g., C: or D:). Next insure that you are in the root directory of this drive by typing:
2. Create the temporary subdirectory \DMSTEMP off the root directory of you hard disk using the DOS command "MKDIR" by typing the following command:
3. Make the \DMSTEMP directory your current directory using the DOS "CD" command:
4. Insert Distribution Disk 1 into your 3.5 inch disk drive and type:
If "A" is not your 3.5 inch disk drive (i.e. the format of your distribution diskettes) then substitute the correct drive letter for "A" in the command string above (e.g. copy B:\*.*).
5. Remove Disk 1, insert Disk 2 and repeat the command string above until the contents of all 5 of the distribution diskettes have been copied to the \DMSTEMP directory on your hard disk. Once this is completed, type:
6. This batch file will automatically decompress the 5 self-extracting files into the \DMSTEMP subdirectory you created. A message will appear on your screen when this process has been completed. After the files have been extracted you are ready to proceed with the installation of the program files. From the \DMSTEMP subdirectory type:
This batch file creates the subdirectory \DMS off the root directory of your current drive, and copies the program files to their proper locations in subdirectories within the \DMS directory. Again, a message will appear on your screen when this process has been completed. To start the DMS program type:
